Custom Icons#
Replace the icon of any app, folder, or widget in your bar with a custom one. Icons are stored in a local library so you can reuse them across items.
Changing an icon#
- Open ExtraBar and click Manage on a preset
- Right-click an item (or open its options menu) and choose Change Icon
- Pick an icon from your library, or import a new one from the other tabs
- Click Apply
To go back to the original icon, click Revert to Original.
Importing icons#
The icon picker has five tabs: Library, Native, SF Symbols, App Icons, and From URL.
Upload from file
On the Library tab, click Upload and select one or more image files. Supported formats:
- PNG (recommended, supports transparency)
- JPEG
- ICNS (macOS icon files)
You can select multiple files at once for batch import.
Download from URL
Switch to the From URL tab, paste an image URL, and click Download. The icon is downloaded and saved to your library.
App Icons
The App Icons tab lists the icons of the applications installed on your Mac. Search for an app and pick its icon for any item.
Native
When you edit an app item, the Native tab shows the menu bar icon resources that app ships with, each in its Original, Black, and White version. Not every app exposes recognizable menu bar icons.
SF Symbols
The built-in picker includes the SF Symbols 7.2 name catalog: up to 7,007 symbols on macOS 26.2. On earlier supported macOS releases, ExtraBar automatically hides symbols the system cannot render.
Use All Symbols to browse the complete compatible catalog, choose a curated category (General, Communication, Navigation, Media, Objects, System, and more), or search by a familiar word such as settings, delete, or home. If you already know the exact SF Symbol name, enter it in the custom-name field and click Use. A Color picker on the tab sets the symbol's color.
Icon library#
All imported icons are saved to your library and can be reused across any item in any preset. You can browse and manage your library in ExtraBar → Settings (⚙) → Icon Library, which shows Your Library and an Import section where you can Browse Files, drop image files, or Import from URL.
The library supports:
- Search — Find icons by name or source
- Rename — Right-click an icon to give it a custom display name
- Delete Icon — Right-click an icon to remove it from the library
Icons imported while editing a specific app are associated with that app and appear first when you open the picker for it.
Icon tint#
Besides replacing an icon, you can apply a tint color to an item's icon. Open the item's options menu in the management view and choose a color under Tint Icon: Black, White, Gray, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, or Purple, or None (Original) to remove it.
Tint is available for folders and widgets, and for apps that use a custom icon or an SF Symbol. An app's original icon cannot be tinted.
Tips#
- High-resolution icons (512x512 or larger) work best — icons are automatically resized
- PNG with transparency is recommended for a clean look
