Floating Mode#

Floating Mode displays your apps in a separate floating bar that appears and disappears on demand.

How it works#

Press a keyboard shortcut and a floating bar appears with all your apps. It auto-hides when you click away or press Escape.

Setting up Floating Mode#

Hotkey: Toggle between Floating Bar and Menu Bar with ⌥ + ⌘ + P (the Toggle Position hotkey) Hide and show the floating bar on demand with ⌥ + ⌘ + B

App menu: Choose Floating Mode (⌘M) from the ExtraBar app menu while you are in the menu bar.

Settings:

  1. Open ExtraBar
  2. Go to Settings (⚙)
  3. Under Position, select the Floating Bar card.

Screen position#

Choose where the floating bar sits on screen. Open ExtraBar → Settings (⚙) → Position → Screen Position:

  • Top — Horizontal bar along the top of the screen (default)
  • Top Left / Top Right — Anchored to a top corner
  • Left / Right — Anchored to a screen edge, with items arranged vertically

The Screen Position section is currently marked BETA.

When Top is selected, an additional Top Alignment control appears with Left, Center, and Right options.

Multiple monitors#

When you have more than one display connected, extra options appear under Position:

  • Show on All Screens — Display the floating bar on every connected monitor simultaneously.
  • Display — When "Show on All Screens" is off, choose which screen the bar appears on. The primary display is labeled.

These options only appear when multiple displays are detected.

Hide on fullscreen#

When enabled, the floating bar automatically hides when a fullscreen app is active and reappears when you exit fullscreen. It is off by default.

Toggle this in ExtraBar → Settings (⚙) → Position → Visibility.

Bar context menu#

Right-click an empty part of the floating bar for quick actions:

  • Open ExtraBar — Open the ExtraBar window
  • Hide Bar — Hide the bar until you show it again with the Show / Hide hotkey
  • Collapse Bar / Expand Bar — Shown when Collapse Bar is available (see below)
  • Move to Menu Bar — Switch to Menu Bar Mode

Collapse the bar#

Collapse Bar folds the floating bar into a single icon. Click the collapse button on the bar, press the Collapse / Expand Bar shortcut, or right-click the bar and choose Collapse Bar. Click the icon or choose Expand Bar to bring the bar back. Configure the button, icon, and shortcut under Settings (⚙) → Collapse Mode — see Collapse Mode.
